Kitchen
Designers help create a functional and visually pleasing kitchen to complement
you and/or your family's lifestyle. They are responsible for submitting
a written contract detailing some of the following: cabinetry, countertops,
flooring, appliances, ventilation, and the lighting plan. You can also
expect them to draw up the final construction drawings detailing the floor
plan, elevations, and design details. These drawings will be given to
the general contractor and cabinet installers to be used during construction.
Fees vary from a set or hourly design fee to a retainer fee that may be
applied to the cabinet order.
A Kitchen Designer may be independent or associated with a showroom or
cabinet-maker. He or she may also be a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD).
The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) administers this certification
process. It includes passing a written test, a specified amount of education,
proof of financial stability, and on the job experience. You can find
a Kitchen Designer through the NKBA
(800) 843-6522 . You may also find a Kitchen Designer by visiting kitchen
cabinet showrooms, local cabinet-makers, home remodeling superstores,
or on ImproveNet.com.
