Estimating Tools

The purpose of using estimating tools is to get a ballpark estimate of the cost of your products, materials and labor. Now it's time to decide how much you want to invest or what you can afford for your remodeling project--put pencil to paper or push your computer mouse around--whichever you prefer. Consider exactly what you want to achieve as leaving just one detail out can create a costly mistake. Also, make sure that you have a little cushion for unexpected expenses--just in case.

Visit our book link under kitchen worksheet to order books on kitchen planning. Follow the suggestions in the workbook to draw up your budget. There are several estimating tools available on the web, including the one at ImproveNet.

The next step is to approach your current lending agency, and then begin to shop around and compare what other lending agencies are offering. Your local newspaper publishes prevailing lending rates. You may also want to link to E-LOAN to see what they have to offer. Another alternative, depending upon the dollar amount, is to use a credit card with frequent flyer mileage or other advantages. Refer to "Before You Remodel" from the National Association of Home Builders for financing ideas including federally funded HUD programs. If you are going to get a loan, be sure to start the loan application process as soon as possible since securing a loan can take time.
