Types of "Lamps"

Referred to as "lamps" in the lighting and design industry, light bulbs come in different styles and wattage. Selecting the right light fixture, choosing the correct bulb size and wattage, and understanding what color is emitted will have an effect on the way your kitchen looks, feels and functions. When selecting lamps, always remember to consider the relationship between color and light. Keep in mind that the color of your cabinetry, walls and appliances will interplay and reflect light. Dark, matte surfaces will absorb light and will probably require more light fixtures and/or lamps. Whereas bright, glossy surfaces will reflect light and lighting requirements will probably be reduced.

Lamp colors range from red-orange-yellow (warm colors) to blue/blue-white (cool colors). Including both cool and warm lamps in your kitchen can provide balanced lighting. In addition, when a dimmer is installed on a switch, the color will change towards a warmer tone. When purchasing lamps (bulbs), remember that each brand will vary in shade. Compared to days gone by, homeowners now have more types of lamps from which to choose. Readily available today are a variety of incandescent, cool and warm fluorescent, halogen, cool-halogen (temperature not ambience), and fiber optic lamps.
