Types of Fixtures

Lighting fixtures have become more decorative and are available in a wide assortment of types, styles, shapes, and sizes to match any decor. The most popular types of fixtures are recessed canisters, track lights, task lights, ceiling pendants (single-arm), chandelier (multi-arm), and wall sconces. Traditionally they can be mounted above, under and in the cabinetry, installed in or hung from the ceiling, attached to the walls, suspended from wall to wall, and under the riser in a step. Recognize that your kitchen may also benefit from the addition of a ceiling fan/light (standard or hugger) because it can circulate air and light the area at the same time.

Contemporary, traditional, stained glass, antique, Victorian, country, art nouveau, and art deco are just a few of the styles available. If your kitchen has a reoccurring shape or design theme, you can complement or contrast it with your lighting fixture. Use gentle flowing curls to emphasize curved cabinetry and/or window lines--or soften the look of angular shapes. In addition, the dimensions of your lighting fixtures need to be well proportioned for the space. If your kitchen is large, it will need larger fixtures and/or a grouping of smaller units. If it is small, you don't want to overwhelm the space with a huge fixture.

When shopping for lighting fixtures get a good look at the variety of colors and finishes that are available. You will see brass, chrome, stainless steel, wrought iron, copper, nickel, pewter, verdigris, glass, enamel, wood, plastic, wicker, zinc, deer antler (lost naturally each year), combinations of these materials, and more. Finishes include brushed, matte, antiqued, polished, and hammered, etc. "On top of that", take notice of unusual shades that can add individualistic character to an otherwise simple (and sometimes less expensive) fixture. Check out shade materials such as cow hide, stained or leaded glass, and natural papers.
