Trash Compactors

If you have limited space in your kitchen, generate a huge amount of trash or are far from your outdoor trash bin, you may find that a compactor is right for you. Compactors are designed to compress debris from one-fourth to one-twelfth its original volume. They are available in slide-out or drop-front units and range in size from 12" - 18" wide. The front panel can be white, black, stainless steel or can have a panel installed to match your cabinetry.

Installed as either under-the-counter or freestanding units, they don't use much electricity and should last about 10 years. However, they do call for special heavy duty plastic trash bags (specifically made for trash compactors). Many compactors spray deodorizer when operated--some units now have non-aerosol spray to reduce fluorocarbon emissions. Options include a fan, safety lock, and quiet motor.

You can make a significant impact in your city's recycling program and the world environment in two ways (check with your city to see review the requirements of their recycling and composting programs):

1. You may keep recyclable items out of your trash compactor (such as glass, cans, recyclable plastics, paper, and cardboard) for separate loose collection or you may use your compactor to compact individual types of recyclable materials.

2. You can also reduce your compactor's trash volume by putting your organic waste into a composting bin.
