Size,
Type & Shape
Standard
sizes are available from window manufacturers and Home Centers. Many manufacturers
have thousands of "standard sizes" from which to choose. Custom sizes,
trims, and finishes can also be ordered, but the cost differential may
be substantial depending upon what you want. The major types and shapes
are:
· double hung--more traditional, has two sashes that move up and
down, most cost effective, often containing muntins (bars that create
a pattern in the window), very common in kitchens
· casement--more contemporary, hinged on one side and swings out
like a door, a convenient crank at the bottom makes for easier opening
over a countertop, often seal tighter when closed and locked vs. double
hung, more expensive than double hung, very common in kitchens
· garden--custom look, often used over the sink, more expensive
than casement
· bay--custom look, often used over the sink or with a window seat arrangement,
more expensive than casement
· bow--similar to a bay with window sections attached (mulled)
together in a gentle arc
· awning or transom--a stationary or operating window directly
above a window or door, can be installed with any style home
· polygons--triangles, etc.
· oval and round
· Palladian--half round, often used over a door or window or a
grouping of windows
· glass block--often used for accent or to diffuse areas from direct
view, used with or without frames
