Downdraft Downdraft ventilation units are integrated into or connected to the cooktop or range. They are especially suited for islands and peninsulas (when you want to maintain the "open" look) and for kitchens that cannot handle an updraft unit because of an obstruction, etc. They can be vented directly out the wall or down through the basement. Some downdraft units have a telescopic mechanism that raises and lowers the unit, allowing it to be completely flat and unobtrusive when not in use. They are more costly to install and must work harder to remove air from the kitchen. Keep in mind that downdraft units can be ineffective for burners that are far away or for steam and odors from tall stockpots.
