Accessibility

If you are moving or planning for new windows or doors, think about how you will open, clean, and maintain the interior and exterior. You should also keep in mind the clearance needed to transport "large items" through the door--like cabinets, major-appliances, furnaces, and water-heaters, etc. Doors should open more than 90° to allow such access.

Make sure you can easily reach your windows for both opening and cleaning purposes. Tilt-in windows give you easy access for cleaning. When located over a counter or sink, greenhouse and corner windows can often be hard for some people to reach and clean without a step stool. Casement windows with a crank are often easier to open over a counter or sink. Try to place windows a minimum of 42" from the corners to allow for multiple cabinet layouts. When you open a casement window, make sure it will not obstruct foot traffic outside the window or cause a hazard to persons outdoors.
