Trash Management

Obviously, you will need to have some type of trash bin/can available, but personal preference will determine where it will be stationed or stored and how many you will need. Out in the open, under the sink, in a pull-out trash cabinet, or in the pantry are all common locations. You will also need to store your never-ending collection of paper and plastic grocery bags. For newspapers, delegate a deep drawer (usually 9-12 inches deep and 15 inches wide--outside dimension). Lay string (crossed at the bottom of the drawer) and stack newspapers on top. When your pile is big enough, tie them up and start again.

Depending upon your level of concern for the environment and that of your city, you may have the opportunity to assist with recycling programs in your area. You can have a single garbage bin for trash or several bins (usually plastic) for each type of recyclable material that can be handled by your region. If you have a can crusher (sometimes attached to bins, you can aid your cause. A trash compactor can also be used to reduce trash or recycling items (usually separated by type). (See Appliances, Trash Compactors) While a disposal will reduce your biodegradable trash, you could also look at putting your vegetable and fruit scraps into a compost bin.
