Planning

Congratulations! At this phase you have decided that you really want a new kitchen. By now, you should have completed the questionnaires and checklists in the Research Phase and become familiar with the products and appliances that are currently available. If you haven't completed these phases, you should do so now. Whether you are looking at a simple face-lift or a complete top-to-bottom design, the time and money you invest in preparation will be rewarded in a successful final product--your great new kitchen.

Take a moment to reflect on the reasons that brought you to this decision. Ask yourself what you expect out of this project--customizing your kitchen to suit your specific lifestyle, updating it to take advantage of the latest trends in kitchen design, or improving the value of your home. Our Personal Project Organizer provides you with many of the tools that will keep your project organized from start to finish (and beyond) and reduce your stress level--because here is where the decisions begin. You can also read more on the subject at "Before You Remodel" by NAHB.

The Planning Phase looks at the scope of your project, hiring professionals, choosing a style to achieve the ambiance you desire, creating a functional floor plan, providing construction drawings, finalizing your budget/financial commitment, securing financing, creating a timeline, and ordering all cabinetry, products and appliances. Before you put any plans together, you should know:
· Your cooking style
· How many cooks will be in the kitchen at the same time
· How you will live in your kitchen--if it's not just for cooking
· Whether you entertain frequently and if cooking is part of the entertainment
· Common kitchen shapes
· How to maximize your available space and increase your efficiency
· The importance of a work triangle
· Work centers--preparation, cooking, and cleanup
· How to accommodate storage needs
· Products and appliances that are best suited to your lifestyle

Credit with Education is Freedom from Hunger's worldwide strategy to bring self-help solutions to the fight against hunger--one family at a time. In 1988, we initiated the Credit with Education program, launching a new era of impact and outreach in our fight against hunger. The success of the program lies in its ability to combine information for improving people's lives with the means to do so.
