Outlets
Keep
in mind that most kitchens do not have sufficient electrical power supply
or outlets. Since we continue to increase the amount of small appliances
we use, it is best to plan for more outlets than your current needs require.
This will enable you to accommodate new appliances and future automation.
When adding electric outlets, note that certain appliances require Ground
Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI's) while others require a dedicated circuit.
Homes that are already "maxed out" on the electrical panel, may require
the addition of a sub-panel to accommodate the added circuits. See the
"Electrical Requirements" section of "Common-Sense Kitchen Design" at
PopularMechanics.com.
Outlets over countertop surfaces should be placed every 24" and alternate
circuits with those on either side. Islands and peninsulas should have
their own outlets. Remember that a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI)
outlet is required within 6 feet of a water source (these devices cut
the electricity when there is contact with water or when your appliance
overloads the circuit).
