Throughout the Planning Phase, refer to the National Kitchen & Bath Association's "Kitchen Planning Checklist". It lists the basic requirements for general layouts, countertop space, appliance space and planning, legroom, storage, and aisle width. These requirements along with the Guidelines listed below will help to make your kitchen functional, efficient and safe--in other words a place to enjoy.

Another article based on information from NKBA's Kitchen Industry Technical Manuals, offers an overview of space requirements for kitchen components. See "Kitchen Design Basics" in the Sweat Equity section at Kitchen-Bath.com.

To add interest and accessibility to your kitchen include varying counter heights and materials, raising the dishwasher, lowering some wall cabinets and maximizing drawer storage. For more interesting detail ideas see "Kitchen Design…" under "Getting Ready To Remodel" at NKBA.
